In Person and Online

In Person - 715 W Morgan St Raleigh NC

When clients aren't making progress, it's not uncommon for providers to feel frustrated, doubting both their client's commitment to change and their own clinical competence.

Client "resistance" is a label often given to behaviors including disengagement, confrontation, attendance inconsistency, and failure to complete homework outside of session.

In this seminar, we'll address common behavioral manifestations of "resistance," identify strategies for working with resistance, and challenge conceptual frameworks of resistance. After attending this course participants will be able to:

  • Define resistance from a range of theoretical perspectives
  • Summarize working models of resistance from a range of theoretical approaches including Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Neurobiology of Trauma, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy
  • Assess the role of cultural identities in resistance
  • Demonstrate strategies for working with client resistance effectively - broaching power differentials, co-creating a felt sense of safety, and collaborating on client-driven therapeutic goals
